Sixty CandlesThe original Doo Whop hit of the 50s , "Sixteen Candles" by The Crests, provided the famous melody and the sentiment for recognizing one of those milestone birthdays. Glenn took liberties to rewrite the lyrics to suit Hawaii Six-0 and decided to weave humor to help make "turning 60" a bit more palatable for anyone experiencing anxiety about being labeled a "senior." Plenty mahalo to our fellow Class of 70 grads from sister schools McKinley and Kaimuki for being our guests and stepping up to perform "Sixty Candles" for us: MHS Tigers Sandi (Ing) Tuitele, Paula (Takara) Yokochi, and Steve Kaneshiro; and KHS Bulldogs Fay Takaesu, Stephen Chang, and Rusty Onishi (who sang the lead part). |

Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday Classmates!
Oh, we love you so! Sixty Candles, One humungous light ! The Fire Marshal is watching, So that things don’t ignite. (Things don’t ignite!) Blow out the candles, if you think you can; But if you need assistance, We got a Toshiba fan. (blow, blow, blow, blow … blow, blow, blow, blow) Bridge: We’re only sixty (sixty), and it’s no mystery; (sixty) That we’re so young at heart, still strong and smart, The Class of Seventy (Class of Seventy) Whoa! |
Sixty Candles, in our hearts will glow; Forever and ever, For we’ll always know. (We'll always know; we'll always know.) Repeat Bridge Sixty Candles, in our hearts will glow; Forever and ever, Till it's time to go. We got lots time mo’! HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!! |
