Hale Ikena at Fort Shafter ...
Where is it?  ... How do you get there? ... What's it like?
Hale Ikena (means "House With a View") is a popular, high-quality banquet facility located on the U.S. Army military base of Fort Shafter in West Honolulu, that is frequented by both military and civilian populations alike.  (Some of you may recall the RHS Class of 70's 30th Reunion being held there.)  Although Hale Ikena is easy to get to, access to any military base requires showing certain documents at the Main Gate.  These requirements, as well as detailed directions, pictures, and maps, are provided on this page to make it easy and problem-free -- so that you arrive at Six-0 in a good mood, smiling, excited, full of anticipation, and ... READY TO PARTY !!!

Required Documents for Fort Shafter Main Gate

Please have the following ready to present to the guards when you enter and stop at the Main Gate:
  • Current driver's license
  • Current vehicle registration
  • Current auto insurance card
  • Current safety check sticker displayed on the vehicle

(This should be "no beeg deal" cuz you should have the above with you wen eva you drive anyway, RIGHT ?!?!!!)

*****   For rental cars:  Please have your rental agreement document to show upon request.  *****

Additionally, we hope the following directions to the Main Gate of Fort Shafter will also be helpful to you:
(Note: Click the picture for a larger view.)

Directions if you're coming from Diamond Head side ...
Get on H-1 heading West or Ewa. You will pass Bishop Museum (on mauka side of freeway) and Farrington High School (on makai side of freeway).  You will next pass the Likelike junction. (Stay on H-1 going Ewa.)
Picture
Pass the Exit that goes to the Airport, Hickam, Pearl Harbor, and stay on H-1 West heading toward Ft. Shafter/Aiea.

Move into the right lane if you haven't done so aleady. (Best to be in the right lane as you approach the "right-hand-bend" after the Airport exit.) Look for Exit 4: Ft. Shafter, Ahua St.
Picture
Shortly after the bend, take the Ft. Shafter, Ahua St. Exit and get off H-1.
Picture
Go up the hill to the traffic light, which is where the Main Gate is. There is a sign pointing right for "Fort Shafter Headquarters." (Be sure to be in the right lane to turn into Ft. Shafter.)

Turn right onto Funston Road. Stop at the Gate, and follow the guards' instructions.

Directions if you're coming from Ewa side ...
Get on H-1 heading East or to Honolulu. Go over Red Hill, passing Kaiser Hospital on mauka side of freeway. Pass the Tripler Exit and stay on H-1.  Move to the right lane as you pass Moanalua Gardens (large park) on the mauka side.

Main Gate to Hale Ikena

Sorry, but the military base security policy understandably prevents us from taking and posting pictures to assist you in getting from the Main Gate to Hale Ikena.  Here are written directions:

1.  From the Main Gate, proceed on the main road, Funston Road.
2.  The road will go downhill and then up again.
3.  Look for the movie theatre on the right. This means you are approaching Carter Drive.
4.  Turn left onto Carter Drive.  The road will go downhill, then up again, and wind a bit.  There a ball field on your left.
5.  Look to your right for Morton Drive and a sign for Hale Ikena.  (A parking lot will be on your left, opposite Morton Drive.)
6.  Turn right onto Morton Drive.  Go up the hill to the facility and park.
7.  YOU HAVE ARRIVED !!!  Put on your big smile, walk with confidence -- head high --- and pretend you are walking the "red carpet"  (after all, you are the star of the show).  Leave all your cares and worries in the parking lot ... put on a big smile ... make a lot of happy noises, and enter the main entrance.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:  Carpooling is a good idea too!  ... especially if the driver knows where to go and how to get there. If everyone in the vehicle has no clue, well ... at least you won't be lost alone. (Nah, nah, nah.)  We'll furnish a phone no. via email about one week from the event so we can send out the "Search and Rescue" team should you get lost.
